A New Journey in Service: Council of Catholic Women

Gloria Wall stands. For two decades, Wall has volunteered in Saint Thérèse Catholic Church and the Diocese of Tulsa and Eastern Oklahoma.

The Saint Thérèse Altar Society is affiliated with the diocesan Council of Catholic Women (CCW). Through CCW we pay $100 a year to the National Council of Catholic Women be an affiliated parish. This affiliation makes us part of NCCW. The mission of NCCW through its membership is to support, empower and educate all Catholic women in spirituality, leadership and service.

The National Council of Catholic Women unites women’s groups throughout the United States. It was founded in 1920 at the request of the United States Catholic Bishops. Our Council of Catholic Women, Diocese of Tulsa and Eastern Oklahoma had their first meeting on August 21, 1973 at Christ the King Church in Tulsa.

Today, our quarterly meetings are hosted by parishes throughout the diocese with a theme for each. On September 19, 2019 we will meet here at St. Therese. The day will include a speaker, mass and lunch. There will be an overview of this year’s NCCW Convention being held in Atlanta, August 21-24. Our Boxes of Joy project in association with Cross Catholic Outreach and NCCW will be in progress. We also hope to be doing Welcome Baskets for Madonna House and St. Elizabeth Lodge. Being a part of the Council of Catholic Women gives me an opportunity to meet women from other parishes, work together on projects to help others, and celebrate mass in different churches in the diocese.

I have been part of Saint Thérèse parish for 20 years and been active in our women’s group for a number of years in different capacities. During that time, I have made good friends, and we have helped our parish. I have been working with CCW for the last four years as Recording Secretary and am impressed with how well the group works together. Our Council Officers, Commission Chairs, and committee members are truly committed “doers”. This is the beginning of my two year term as President of CCW and I will be relying on the experience of the women who have been such a big part of this organization for many years. In my life long journey of faith, I hope to continue to grow as a good Catholic. I am thankful for all the good in my life and being part of the church and the sacraments.
